Tips to Get Your Kids Active

This month we’re focusing on small steps you can take with your family to encourage a more active lifestyle. Finding time and motivation to keep your kids going can be a challenge, but you can easily make a positive change just by tweaking some of their favorite everyday activities like watching TV, playing video games and hanging out with friends.


Here’s how:

  1. Opt for active TV time. :
    When there is a commercial break, everyone picks an exercise of his or her choice to do until the show resumes.   2. Dance it out.:
    Make a playlist of your kids’ favorite upbeat songs. Dance it out! Also, swap out their regular video games for Just Dance for Wii or Kinect and get the whole family involved.
  3. Invite a friend.:
    Allow your child to invite a friend over after school. Post-homework time, encourage them to go outside and play. They can relay race, kick around a soccer ball, shoot hoops or play tag. Challenge them to a backyard scavenger hunt or create a fun obstacle course!


“Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” according to the CDC. Poor diet and sedentary lifestyle, irritated by hours spent in front of the TV and playing video games, are big contributing factors. 5210+10, a pediatric obesity prevention program supported locally by Kohl's Cares, recommends at least one hour of physical activity per day.
