Backpack Safety: How to Choose the Best Backpack
Backpacks are one of the first things your child may want to buy when returning to school. They can express a personal sense of style, are incredibly handy and help keep kids organized all year. However, backpacks can become too heavy when not worn properly or loaded down with too many items, which can cause potential back problems. Here are a few tips to make sure your child’s backpack is safe:
- Look for a properly fitted backpack with two padded shoulder straps and a padded back. The size of the backpack should match the size of the child. Also a waist strap can take some of the pressure off the shoulders.
- Pay close attention to the way the backpack is positioned on the back. Wear the backpack over the strongest mid-back muscles.
- Encourage kids to use their locker or desk frequently throughout the day instead of carrying all of their books in the backpack.
- Encourage kids to bring home only the books needed for homework or studying each night.
