My Hero

My Hero

Angelle Pate, a registered dietitian with Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital Pediatric Obesity Clinic, has acted as a mentor for fourteen-year-old patient Kourtney Janeau beyond the clinic confines. Kourtney came to the clinic overweight, unhealthy and unhappy. She remembers, “Sometimes, I would cry and cry. I felt like it was too hard to even try to do anything about it.” With Angelle’s guidance, Kourtney started eating a healthy breakfast, replacing soda with water and exercising more. She has lost 10 pounds. Kourtney recently took what she learned and ran with it, literally. She shared with Angelle that she wanted to run in a 5K race, a little over three miles. Angelle was right by her side at a race last December and another one in the spring. Angelle says, “She opened my eyes. Everyone needs a little push, including myself. These kids can make an impact on all of us as well.” Angelle, who was recently awarded the honor of ‘Louisiana Dietitian of the Year’, will readily tell you nothing was as special as the award Kourtney would bestow upon her when she named Angelle as her hero for a class presentation. Here is a portion of the video Kourtney created.
