Whether it's text messaging, Snapchat, Twitter or Facebook, social media is all about brevity. Teens continue to come up with new and original acronyms. As a parent, it’s helpful to stay informed so you know what your children are talking about.

Here are some general abbreviations that you as a parent may want to be aware of.

AMA — Ask me anything
AYKMWTS — Are you kidding me with this (profanity)
BAE — Baby, an affectionate term for someone's girlfriend or boyfriend
BF — Boyfriend
BRB — Be right back
BTW — By the way
Cook Session — When one or several teens gang up on another kid on social media
DGYF — Dang girl, you fine
DM — Direct message
FB — Facebook
FOMO — Fear of missing out
FTW — For the win; also, (profanity) the world
GF — Girlfriend
GTFO — Get the (profanity) out
GTI — Going through it
HTH — Happy to help
ICYMI — In case you missed it
IDC — I don’t care
IDGAF — I don’t give a (profanity)
IDK — I don’t know
IG or Insta — Instagram
