Pediatric hematologist-oncologists provide specialized care to children with a variety of blood disorders and cancers. Hematology, or diseases of the blood, might include sickle cell disease, hemophilia (free bleeders), anemia, and other changes in the blood resulting in too many or too few cells.
We provide the latest in medical care and techniques to keep these children healthy and happy. From periodic screening of organ function to advanced supportive care to reduce stroke risk, our sickle cell, patients benefit from a wide range of services and therapies. Excellent long term and short term care that allows the patient and family to maintain as normal a life, as free from crises as possible, is our goal. In addition to excellent clinical care, we now offer select sickle cell patients the opportunity to enroll in safe, regulated and well run clinical trials offering access to the latest in sickle cell treatment and care.
We now offer a transition clinic to prepare our teenagers for a successful move to adult sickle cell care in conjunction with physicians at Mary Bird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center.
Pediatric Oncology, or the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in children, might include diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, and solid tumors. Our group is also experienced in the delivery of care for children with all manner of malignant disease or cancer.
Through our affiliation with St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we offer state of the art diagnostics and treatment to children with cancer. We rely on effective chemotherapy, biological therapy and molecularly targeted therapies, as well as access to Phase I and II therapies at the forefront of medical development. Our team employs cutting edge surgical care and now even Radiation Therapy for children through our collaboration with Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. Collaborating with researchers at St. Jude, our hematologist-oncologists have access to world class expertise, state-of-the-art cancer research and treatment protocols.
Many of these advances were earned through cooperative study. When our patients participate in studies, they do so in an environment that is familiar and convenient to them. The marriage of uncompromising care with the warmth of a small community deeply attached to each young patient make this clinic a truly wonderful place.
